Now let me state this, I am prolife, but not in the same way that most are. I do not believe that a government has a right to tell a person how to treat their body. What I think is that society must change around the government. Society must be the ones to change this open attitude about sex and about abortion, and yes even put a stigma on it. I know that sounds cold, but the way this battle is occurring in the media is crude and wrong. Republicans a putting blatant lies and pro- life supporters are holding sting operations to destroy Planned Parenthood. Don’t get me wrong, abortion is an evil thing, but cancer screening for low-income women isn’t. Teaching women and men about safer sex practices isn’t evil. Planned Parenthood is the nation’s largest abortion provider, but if we didn’t live in a society that was so permissive about abortion, Planned Parenthood would be seen as a good thing that helps the poor and prevents cancer. How do we deal with this dichotomy? Education, self-esteem, and teaching girls that they are worth waiting for. If we moved our society back to a place where saving yourself for marriage ment something, the number of abortions would then go down to those that are what some doctors say are “medically necessary.” Rather than fighting a moral battle in the State Houses and Legislatures we need to fight this battle in the church, home and school.

So my father likes to watch Fox News, and yes I judge him for it. Now the people on the show kept discussing, if the president put some Republican measures into the new health care bill would it pass, and most of the experts said no, that no Republican senator would pass health care. One of the topics of discussion was Tort Reform, I had never heard of this term, so I looked it up. And the short version is that Tort Reform would decrease the amount and ability of a person to sue for damages in the area of malpractice. I actually think this is a good thing. Towns are loosing their doctors because they cannot afford their premiums and the costs of doctors are going up because they are over run with patients. Now I am not saying you shouldn’t sue if your doctor screws up, or causes death. But the excessive judgements are ridiculous. Why should someone get millions of dollars for something that may or may not have been preventable. A friend of mine who is a nurse says that people don’t want to put their names on pieces of papers saying they were in the room for any procedure from an operation or a birth because if they decide to sue anybody who was in the room could pay out. Now this isn’t right. The doctors and nurses need to be protected too just like the patients and this would be good for the country.

So according to this August 18th article in the New York Times it looks as though there are some in the democratic party that are considering taking advantage of the Supermajority in the Senate and passing a Democratic only health care reform bill. This being because of the strong opposition from some in the Republican party who seem to want to have any form of health care or insurance reform fail. This is very dangerous. Taking the considerations of a large segment of the population out is very dangerous, not just for their votes, but for the precedent this could create. What about environmental reform, are we not going to take big business into consideration and just pass what we think is right. That could cost a lot of jobs. Having the democrats go at this alone is crazy and irresponsible. I whole heartily believe there needs to be some form of health care reform in this country, that focuses on preventative care. This bill should be funded by the federal government, which yes would create a tax hike in one place, but would lower taxes in others because we would be paying for the poor to see a doctor for a physical and not for the poor to spend the week in the hospital because they went to the ER for pneumonia. The government requires that car insurance companies insure drivers, because that is important for everyone to have car insurance, but the government doesn’t require health insurance companies to ensure everyone. Could this lower the cost of health insurance, making health insurance affordable for the general public, and yet keeping the companies privately owned and controlled just like the auto insurance industry. Just a thought
