Alright don’t get me wrong, think that President Obama can do a lot for world peace and prosperity but giving a Nobel prize to a person for work they may do as president seems really presumptuous and kind of wrong. I am not going to be my mother and say that it “taints the value of the Nobel Prize” but it’s not what the prize is for. The Nobel Prize is for, to quote Alfred Nobel‘s will, “The capital shall be invested by my executors in safe securities and shall constitute a fund, the interest on which shall be annually distributed in the form of prizes to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind. The said interest shall be divided into five equal parts, which shall be apportioned as follows: one part to the person who shall have made the most important discovery or invention within the field of physics; one part to the person who shall have made the most important chemical discovery or improvement; one part to the person who shall have made the most important discovery within the domain of physiology or medicine; one part to the person who shall have produced in the field of literature the most outstanding work of an idealistic tendency; and one part to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity among nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.”
Now I know President Obama is a great man who WILL do many great things as president, but he hasn’t yet. That is not the spirit of the award and I honestly think that the president should have declined the award for that reason. But as a human being I understand why he didn’t. It’s cool to say you are a Nobel Prize winner, but he didn’t deserve it yet. I just hope he lives up to the medal.
