If you haven’t been living under a rock then you must know that the Supreme Court will be ruling on two major cases dealing with gay rights. One based on California’s ban on same-sex marriage, and the other based on the Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA as you may have heard it. And one can read what will the Supreme Court do, and how liberal will the court be, and how conservative will the court be. The judges have to ask themselves a question. Does the right to marry apply to all people of legal age? If the answer to that is yes, then are all marriages equal? Some may argue that marriage that cannot produce children aren’t equal to those that can produce children, but that’s for your conscience to decide and not for the courts to be deciding the nation’s morals. If the answer to both of those questions though are yes then there is no question how the Supreme Court should rule. Yes it will cause initial upheaval, but so did when laws against multi-racial couples were struck down. The Supreme Court has the opportunity to show the world that Americans believe in a free and equal society. The majority doesn’t protect the rights of the minority very well, that’s why we have laws. So let the Supreme Court show what the American ideal is, that all men (and now women) are created equal.
