I hope this works, I really do.
If you haven’t been paying attention to the news, a deal has been made with Syria that leaves a military option open. Basically, Syria has to declare all of its chemical weapons within one week UN inspectors will be on the ground by mid-November. Under this plan, all chemical weapons will be out of Syria by the middle of 2014. If this plan works and everyone does what they say they will, this will be a great international victory. The Syria situation is much more complicated and not as clear cut as any of us want to pretend that it is. That’s the reason why I haven’t written about it. I don’t feel as though I have enough authority to try to explain this complicated situation because, as anyone who reads a newspaper knows, there is no winner anywhere. There is no Cold War style “good guy” or “bad guy” and honestly the only reason the US was sticking its nose into Syria is because of chemical weapons. The international community has put its foot down against chemical weapons since WWI. This situation is complicated, and I will never try to be an authority on it, especially since there always seems to be some new twist and turn to it. I cross my fingers that this deal goes through. But I really cross my fingers that the Syrian civil war comes to an end.
Here is a video by Hank Green explaining the basics of the Syria situation.
