Women will be on US Currency… Soon

It’s official, Harriet Tubman will be on the twenty-dollar bill. This announcement excited groups like Women on 20 who have been campaigning to put a woman on the twenty-dollar bill for over a year now. As we explained last year when the treasury announced they would add a woman to the ten-dollar bill, the twenty-dollar bill was chosen because 1920 is the year women received the right to vote.

Last month the treasury department announced that a woman would not only be featured on the twenty-dollar bill, but also on the ten and five dollar bills.

The twenty will have Harriet Tubman on the front and a picture of the White House and Andrew Jackson on the back.

The ten-dollar bill will keep Alexander Hamilton on the front while adding images of Lucretia MottSojourner TruthSusan B. AnthonyElizabeth Cady Stanton, and Alice Paul alongside the Treasury building on the back.

The five-dollar bill will keep Abraham Lincoln on the front and will honor historic events at the Lincoln Memorial, Martin Luther King‘s I Have a Dream Speech, and Eleanor Roosevelt bringing Marion Anderson to the Lincoln Memorial to sing. This act defied the segregation at the time and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

This will be the first time that an African American will be on US paper currency — commemorative coins have been released bearing the faces of African American leaders.

I look forward to seeing this currency, hopefully by 2020 in time for the 100 year anniversary of women’s suffrage, and look forward to seeing the designs as they are released.
