Why did the Secretary of the Navy “Resign”

On social media yesterday I saw multiple posts discussing the resignation of the Secretary of the Navy, Richard Spencer. Most of the comments fell under the line of “yeah, stick it to Trump” or something like that. But it made me actually wonder why a decorated service member at the top of his career would resign such a prestigious post.

Eddie Gallagher is, at the time of writing this article, a Navy Seal. Gallagher was charged with stabbing a twelve-year-old ISIS fighter in Iraq and then posing with the dead body and taking pictures with it. Gallagher was acquitted in July of murder, but not for posing with the body. He was sentenced with a reduction in rank and four months confinement, which was given as time served.

What makes this interesting is the President’s involvement in Gallagher’s case. In March the president tweeted support for Gallagher and helped move him to “less restrictive confinement.” He has been according to multiple sources been involving the White House in the Gallagher case. The Navy is currently reviewing whether or not Gallagher should lose the rank of Navy Seal, the president has tweeted that it won’t happen. The former Navy Secretary said that there should be a military review.

Basically Richard Spencer argues that the White House should stay out of the military discipline. “I cannot in good conscience obey an order that I believe violates the sacred oath I took in the presence of my family, my flag and my faith to support and defend the Constitution of the United States,” Spencer wrote in his letter to the President acknowledging his termination.

What I find most interesting is that the president is getting involved with this while impeachment investigations are being held against him in the House of Representatives. Articles of Impeachment will most likely be voted upon by the end of the year. I think that either the president wants to distract the American people or himself.
