Women’s Equality Day

Women’s Equality Day is a holiday that was created by Congress to celebrate the 1920 signing of the 19th Amendment. This holiday was designated by Congress in 1973 and has been declared yearly by the President.

I have never heard of this holiday before.

This year, 2020, Americans are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the signing of the 19th amendment. This amendment states:

The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.
Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.[1]

The 19th Amendment

This amendment in practice only gave white women the right to vote. Women of color would not be able to access their right to vote until the 1960s.

Social media has placed this holiday at the forefront this year. Probably because it is an election year. The Republican National Convention is taking place as we speak and a well known anti-abortion activist Abby Johnson gave a graphic speech art the RNC. The media has also recognized that trans women, especially trans women are disproportionate targets of violence.

Women’s Equality Day is nice, and it is nice to honor the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment. I just hope all women use their right to vote.
