Women Leading the Labor Movement: Roberta Lynch

Roberta Lynch became Executive Director of AFSCME Council 31 in 2014. AFSCME Council 31 represents more than 90,000 active and retired state, county, and city government employees, state universities, local school districts, and nonprofit agencies. Roberta Lynch has been a grassroots community, labor, and political organizer for many years.

Lynch has served on the Calumet Community Religious Conference, the Chicago Area Committee on Occupational Safety and Health, and the Harold Washington mayoral campaign.

She is the co-author of ‘Rusted Dreams: Hard Times in a Steel Community‘ published by the University of California Press. ‘Rusted Dreams‘ documents the failure of all parties to recognize their shared common objectives, causing the decline of the steel industry in the Calumet region and brutal repercussions for the surrounding community.

As Executive Director of AFSCME Council 31, Roberta Lynch is dedicated to expanding collective bargaining rights, raising the minimum wage so that it is a real living wage, paid sick and family leave for all workers, and equal pay for women.
