Taking a Chainsaw to Terrorism Prevention Efforts
Before President Trump and his Republican enablers took the United States to war in Iran, they took a chainsaw to terrorism prevention efforts.
The military and law enforcement only react after terrorist events occur. Counter-terrorism efforts are necessary to prevent terrorism.
The Trump administration laid off staff and closed the State Department’s Office of Countering Violent Extremism and Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations.
Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships at the Department of Homeland Security laid off more than a third of it’s staff.
Cuts were made to the Task Force on Extremism in Fragile States.
The Countering Violent Extremism team at the U.S. Institute of Peace was laid off.
Making the situation even more difficult, Trump reallocated terrorism prevention Homeland Security Grants from Democratic states to Republican states.
The Grants pay for preparedness efforts for counties, sheriffs and police departments. Grant money is used to update and help pay for emergency communications equipment, bomb squads, intelligence operations, mass gathering security, equipment purchases, and training.
In addition, FEMA now requires states to spend part of their anti terrorism funding on arresting migrants.
Partisan chainsaw politics will not protect us against terrorism.
After leading the United States into war with Iran, Trump and his Republican enablers have left us vulnerable to the inevitable terrorist attacks on U.S. soil.
