5 Shows You Should Binge Watch Right Now
As a university senior one of the things I’ve learned is that my busiest binge-watching-tv-shows-while-eating-Cadbury’s time of the year is during midterm and finals season (the irony is not amusing at all). So without further ado I present to you my list of things you should binge watch right now:
Gotham: I actually heard about this show before the pilot even aired and since I do adore superheroes on the big screen I thought I should give it a go – then I managed to forget about it until last month. Since Season 1 is available on Netflix I decided to watch it and wow did I make a mistake forgetting about it before. Apart from the incomparable Daredevil (again Netflix — you beast, you) this is one of my favorite superhero shows. I love the dark and gritty quality of the video, the fantastic costumes (be they the perfectly fitted suits or the gorgeous ball gowns) and — most of all — the amazing acting and and screenplays. While with a TV show it is often hard to be 100% all of the time this show comes real close. I feel weirdly sympathetic and fond of Penguin, Fish Mooney is a #BossAssBitch, and James Gordon is my hero. Also, points for scoring the incredible Morena Bacarin.
Scandal: I have to admit I am a huge Shonda Rhimes fan. I’ve been avidly following this show since it started (Kerry Washington is quite simply incredible) and am even more thrilled with the new season — especially since it is live streaming on Netflix every week. Apart from the quintessential Shondaland charm the show is thrilling, fun, steamy, #sexy, and scandalous. I recommended it to some people to binge watch a few months ago and ended up receiving multiple text messages consisting of capitals and exclamation marks as they watched the political shenanigans play out, I figured that was a good sign. While it’s a political drama at heart it is also a great procedural show with Washington’s Olivia Pope playing a DC-fixer who deals with murder, sex scandals, and top secret spy agencies on a regular basis.
How To Get Away With Murder: I know I have listed two Shonda Rhimes TV shows here but I can’t help it. I actually tried watching this last year when it premiered and couldn’t get into it for some reason. However after hearing about it from multiple friends I decided to give it a shot… And ended up watching all of Season 1 in the space of 24 hours. Viola Davis is incredible as the incredibly smart and manipulative Professor Keating, a veritable warrior of the grey areas (no seriously, she makes me want to be a lawyer while simultaneously making me question my morals as I root for her and her team). Keating is a warrior when faced with her husband’s potential philandering as her students race around dealing with a remarkable amount of homicides. The show is intense and dark and compelling all at the same time.
Madame Secretary: This show was a bit of a surprise to me. When I was commanded by a friend to check it out I was more bored than excited, a television show about a female secretary of state, I already have Scandal for political intrigue and, well, scandal! But Madame Secretary is a brilliant, and fun, show that allows the viewers to not only see the complex intricacies, and heartbreak, involved in being the Secretary of State of the United States but also how this kind of a political office can affect a family. Apart from the political issues and — surprisingly — current world problems shown in the show, the awesome Tea Leoni shows off her prowess as being a slightly reluctant, and brilliant, strategist when dealing with international incidents, military endeavors, and misbehaving teenagers. While not an action packed roller coaster like Scandal it is a super enjoyable watch and if you’re interested in something a bit more mellow this is definitely the show to watch!
Humsafar: While many people are aware of Indian soap operas and their incredible dramatics (they are wonderful sometimes) not many people are into Pakistani soap operas — that is until HumTV’s Humsafar came out a couple of years ago. It shows the immortal story of a rich boy and a poor girl who — and here is where the story gets a bit weird — are forced into an arranged marriage to the chagrin of his mother and his best friend (who also happens to be in love with him). The story is further complicated due to class differences, financial differences, and his scheming mother and best friend. While I am not a huge fan of soap operas and desi dramatics I did end up watching about 10 episodes of this show in one go: it manages to show a more contemporary version of Pakistan as well as being one of those shows you love to hate, a show which leaves you desperately wondering after each episode “what happens next dammit.” This show changed Pakistani television and is definitely worth checking out due to its stellar cast — Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan, both of whom are now forging careers in Bollywood — and dramatic love story. Watch it now on Youtube or ErosNow.
