Can We Talk about Jimmy Carter

Posted on

Speaking on Friday, June 28th at a Carter Center Event in Leesburg, VA former President Carter was asked about Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Carter replied

“Well, the president himself should condemn it, admit that it happened, which I think 16 [of the] intelligence agencies have already agreed to say. And there’s no doubt that the Russians did interfere in the election. And I think the interference although not yet quantified, if fully investigated would show that Trump didn’t actually win the election in 2016. He lost the election, and he was put into office because the Russians interfered on his behalf.”

Former President Jimmy Carter

Former President Carter went on to call President Trump an “illegitimate President.”

Carter is a highly regarded older statesmen in the Democratic party. He is known more for his humanitarian work now a day than for his one term presidency.

Coming on the heels of the first Democratic Candidate debates, I wish that Carter would have kept his opinions of Trump to himself and allowed the candidates to speak. I should be pushing column inches about those candidates, or the G20 sumit rather than what a man said at a party thrown by his own foundation.
