Censure

Posted on

Impeachment is not the only way for the legislature to condemn the acts of a president.

Since the founding of the country, resolutions of censure have been filed against several presidents.

Censure would be a formal statement by the House expressing a severe rebuke of the president.

Impeachment charges by the House must fall within the specific language in the constitution. Senators who vote to convict or aquit, however, are not subject to the same requirements of impartiality and integrity that we require of jurors in other circumstances.

The House could choose to reprimand the president by censure in place of or along with impeachment.

As former F.B.I. Director James Comey has said about impeachment, “A lot of his (the president) supporters would think some kind of coup had taken place… We need to take responsibility for this and vote next November, and show we have a certain set of values and we insist that our leaders reflect those values.”

If censured by the House, the American people would be able to render further judgement in the next election.
